No one wants to admit that the time has come for their loved one to enter a nursing home or aged care facility. But the reality is, that as we age, we tend to require a little more care and support to enable us to live our lives to the fullest.
At Superior Care we are sensitive to the upheaval that comes with moving into an aged care facility and are here to help you with the transition. We aim to minimise the emotional disruption and anxiety that is sometimes associated with the move and aid in any way possible with the financial process.
Financially, some people may be entitled to have their accommodation payments met partly or in full by the Australian Government, while others with need to fund this entirely themselves. The most suitable payment method for you and your family will depend on individual financial circumstances and you may like to seek financial advice.
Our best advice in looking for an aged care home is to do your homework.
The first step is to obtain a free assessment with a member of an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). An ACAT will talk to you about your current situation and work out if you are eligible to receive government-subsidised aged care services. The assessment will help identify what level of care you need, be it low, high or dementia care. It would be beneficial at this stage to review your income and assessments before getting in touch with an aged care facility.
Before commencing your research into aged care homes, make a list of ‘must have’ resources and inclusions. For example items such as air-conditioning, on-site beauty salon and private suites etc. Try not to make this list too detailed or you may exclude some good options.
Start researching aged care facilities in your preferred area. Look online, check out their websites. Do they offer lifestyle programs, do they have open visiting hours, do they have an established reputation?
Once you have narrowed your list down, start making appointments to view the facilities and meet key staff. This is where you should trust your instincts. The welcome you receive and the availability of key staff is an excellent indicator of your future engagement with the facility.
Now, it’s decision time. Choose the facility that best suits your needs. Remember, there may not be a facility that ticks all of your boxes, but you will find that most modern facilities can accommodate and meet the majority of needs.
The important thing is that your loved one will be receiving the best care and support 24/7 and reside in a place that feels like home and genuinely cares about the wellbeing of their residents.
