Wellington Park May Newsletter

Last month our Wellington Point aged care residents were very busy with lots of events such as Easter celebrations and an ANZAC Day commemoration.

Bingo in Diamond

Surprisingly bingo can be more than just entertainment and enjoyment; a round of bingo is a fantastic way to stretch those mental muscles. Playing bingo can help to improve cognition and listening skills, help stimulate short term memory and thought processes while promoting socialisation, which is essential for seniors to maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle.

This week our friends in diamond enjoyed a few rounds of bingo with an Easter theme. There were lots of concentration, laughter and encouraging support from each other as well as scrumptious prizes to be won.

Jeni on Saxophone

Jeni marvelled us with her bluesy sounds on her saxophone and amazed us with her husky, sultry voice. The residents requested songs and Jeni delivered them with her bluesy tones.

This was our first visit from Jeni, and all participating residents agreed, they felt uplifted and cannot wait to have Jeni visit us again!

Blue Notes Jazz Quartet

It’s always a pleasure to sit back, relax and listen to these talented musicians who come along to entertain us. Not only do we hear the songs we all know, but they also played ones we don’t know.

Everyone is encouraged to join in, either by singing or clapping along. Although jazz tunes can be a little tricky to clap along to, practice makes perfect. What a great morning.

What a wonderful treat we were fortunate enough to experience. The wonderful and talented ladies of the butterfly Ukulele players came and treated us to an outstanding performance.

The Butterflies are a group of ladies that play with the GRUBS (Greater Redlands Ukulele Band) and show off their talents to audiences throughout the Redlands.

They played so many old time favourites from the famous ‘it’s a long way to Tipperary’ and ‘Home on the range’ to ‘how much is that doggy in the window’. All had fun with lots of singing, clapping, toe-tapping and laughter.

Carpet Bowls

Playing carpet bowls has so many benefits such as improving one’s fitness, coordination and skill development. It also increases confidence, self-esteem and enhances mental wellbeing while being a very social sport.

Our Wentworth residents have so much fun playing this highly competitive game. There were four teams of four, trying their best to win while having fun at the same time. It was a very close win, but the Green team pushed through and won by a few points in front.

Jim Bibby

Jim Bibby was back with an abundance of Australian pride, with Anzac day in mind. The residents had an enjoyable time with a bundle of Aussie favourites. There was something for everyone to hum, sing and tap along to.

Mary, Head of Care, treated us with her lovely voice and sang alongside Mr Bibby for a few songs. 10 Guitars, a New Zealand folk song was undoubtedly a favourite for all that joined.

Easter Morning Tea

With a splash of Easter colour and a generous spread of butter on some delicious hot cross buns, the residents gathered to enjoy the sweet and tasty side of Easter.

The Easter quiz had us thinking, which added to the laughter and cheerful banter of the morning. We spoke about the origin of Easter and how different cultures celebrate this holy occasion.

We also had a lovely surprise visit from Meg the Easter bunny.

Anzac Day Commemoration & Morning Tea

Today the residents gathered to pay tribute to the ANZACS, and recognise the sacrifice that many men and women have made for our great country.

We spoke of their courage and bravery, shared heartfelt stories and together we read aloud the Ode, which was followed by the Last Post.

With great pride, we sang along to the Australian and New Zealand anthems and shared a beautiful morning tea amongst friends.
